Hanbury Racing brings you his weekly each-way double for Saturday's racing from Ascot & Ayr.
17:00 Royal Ascot
The Wokingham is always a real cavalry charge, where you need a good draw and the gaps to open at the right times to have any chance of winning.
Prince Lancelot’s French connections know these issues far too well, as they had a big chance in the Royal Hunt Cup two years ago with Al Roc who travelled like the winner two out but didn’t get a clear run before staying on strongly to challenge, only to find himself drawn on the wrong side of the track, finishing a close 6th to those drawn high.
This week it has paid to be drawn in the middle so F Chappet must be hopeful his Prince Lancelot is well berthed in stall 18 of 28.
Prince Lancelot is F Chappet’s only runner this week and they must feel he is well handicapped off 103 to make the trip worthwhile. The four-year-old looks to have improved this year with two smart wins, including in a hot Listed race last time out, where he has been held up and showed a smart turn of foot both times.
He has postmarked 108 and 112 this year, so the UK handicapper has been very kind to allocate him a mark of just 103.
His run style means he will need luck in running, and his French jockey will have to judge his hold-up tactics well, but I think he is a Group horse and could burst through and win this well.
I, therefore, recommend 1 point each way at 25/1.
He is still value at 16/1.
14:59 Ayr
Horses for courses is a well-used adage, and it certainly describes Glasses Up love affair with Ayr.
Glasses Up’s race record is a healthy-looking 7 wins and 11 placed efforts from 49 runs. However, when you arrow in on his Ayr form of 6 wins and 5 places from 21 runs, you realise just how much a course specialist he is.
All his wins have been in handicaps off marks between 75 and 82.
Last year his mark had reached a high of 90 and he struggled to be competitive, but after a few bad runs at the end of last year, and four mediocre runs this year his mark has dropped to a workable 78.
He hasn’t run at his beloved Ayr for seven runs, the last being a good second off 84, so the fact he pitches up here for the first time this season off gives him every chance.
The jockey booking of Paddy Mather’s is also a massive positive as he has won on him six times.
The good ground and 1m 4F will be ideal for Glasses Up and with so much in his favour I am gsurprised we can back him at 20/1 with Bet365.
I, therefore, recommend 1 point each way.
